I can guarantee I'l start a ton of flames; but heck, that's my job, isn't it?
This is a list of reasons why Melody shouldn't be hated - this does not say she's my favourite or that she's not flawed, but that most critiques of her say ''I hate her.'' for no reason.
Its fine to hate a character, just as it is to love a fictional character some scoff at [eilonwy or pocahontas, for example]
Major point 1 - her actions:
First of all, most people hate her for the film's storyline as opposed to how she reacts to it; and while the story is tired at best, I do think this is unfair - for example:
Friendship - Ariel was beloved by all, whilst Melody had guardians but no friends, and was mocked despite being royalty - call it bad writing, which it probably is, but I'd like too think it was saying that if she was that mocked even with her position, she felt hopeless and that she couldn't even talk to family.
Commitment to her dream: I've called this such to make it unbiased; Ariel's dream was to be loved, and she would fight for it [despite the more stalkerish nature.
Melody's dream was to have fins -odd and clichés, as it is the reverse of her mothers dream - however,it is in her blood, her heritage and most probably not out of the blue.
Conclusion - these are both good dreams- yes, that's right; I'm not saying either is superior unlike some who say ''Ariel just chased after a guy'' and yes, that is all she did, and in the past I hated that - however, who wouldn't give anything to be loved - it's only how she goes about this that is concerning, and her utter lack of care about the chaos she caused - its not her motivation that bothers me - its just its execution.
As for Melody; she has real friends for the first time; and unlike Ariel who wanted to change for herself, she wants to help another; Morgana, because apparently it is the right thing to do.
Now, a lot of people say she's stupid for trusting Morgana; but she had given her the one dream she desired, and when they complain that she's evil looking and Melody's stupid for trusting her - one word; Ursula - usually it's one standard for Ariel and another for Melody.
However, when she knows she has done wrong she tries setting it right, and in the end unites her heritage with her home instead of just saying ''the sea is my home now.''
Major point 2 - her personality:
A lot of people degrade her since she is so similar to Ariel; but actually that could be turned around from bad to good writing in the right perspective; think about it; her mother is over protective; her father doesn't seem to do anything and she has no friends - all leading to the fact that she is not allowed out or goes out with anyone; hence why she sneaks off; however as well as this, its probaly why she is so similar; the ordinary fish don't talk to her at this point and sebastian is a gaurdian and not a friend, and she naturally has no real friends anyway - leading the major parts of her personality to be developed by her mother; not just present but past.
Also, she is called bratty - but if you had no social life; were considered an outcast for doing stuff you like and the one driving force in your life put so much pressure on you you would not really be a model child.
It is also presented that she is fairly unhappy; unlike Ariel who was joyous and outgoing in her film, even before her dream came true.
It's fine if you don't like her, but here are my reasons why she is not as bad a character as you may think.
Oh and please, if you give reasons as to why you hate her; you are welcome to - as long asthey are properly explained and not ''zomg how can u like her!!!''
